When buying LED lit screen, check if it is side-lit or actually back-lit (better & pricier). A side-lit LED screen will be thinner and a back-lit one will be as regular CCFL LCDs. Samsung is a good brand for LED TVs.
When buying Plasma, remember that they don’t work on high altitudes. If you are in the 6,500 - 7,500 range, you may have to test Plasma at that altitude before you buy. Plasma TVs have better picture quality than LEDs and are more suitable for watching movies, gaming etc. Panasonic is the leading brand for Plasmas.
Don’t care about the packaged hulu-pandora-facebook-youtube-netflix. They should not be a selling point for a TV. You can get them for cheap with a set-top box.
60 Hz v/s 120 Hz depends on the source material. If your source is 120 Hz, you will notice the difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz TVs.
If you are looking for a TV with a screen larger than 40 inches, go for 1080p. The difference is not much noticeable on smaller screens.
Don’t trust in-door TV demos at the Electronic Stores. They control calibration depending on what they want to sell and use a video with low color range that can make any TV look good. Read reviews.
Don’t buy cables at the point of sale. You will be charged at lot. Go to amazon.com or monoprice.com and buy the ones you need online.
Don’t buy extended warranties at the point of sale. Check squaretrade.com for great deals on warranty.
When buying Sansung, look at the sticker on the box to determine who makes the LCD panel (A, C and SQ). A and C are outsourced. SQ is made by Samsung, go for SQ.
If you are ok to buy used ones, the best time to buy a TV is after the super bowl. You will find already discounted TVs returned and on sale for low prices. These TVs are new and are discounted as they can’t be sold as new.
Don’t waste money on the features that are printed on the box. True-motion, dynamic contrast etc are of no value.
If buying from a local mattress store, go to 2 or 3 different stores. Ask for half the marked price (specially at the chain stores, they mark up the price with a huge margin). If they don’t agree to your price, just leave. Go to another mattress store, look for a similar mattress and tell them that the other mattress store was going to give it to you for 50% of the price. If you are not good at haggling ask for free stuff, like pillows, covers, frame or delivery.
Mattresses stain quickly, so get some kind of cover for it immediately.
If you can afford it, buy natural latex ones.
If you sweat a lot memory foam might not be the best for you.
Go to the store on a Tuesday or Wednesday after 7 PM (or 2 hrs before closing time). Sales people are willing and able to significantly discount merchandise to make a sale. Keep asking for a discount or just saying “I like this mattress but I’m not ready to buy today as I have $x with me now”.
Mattresses dip in the middle if they lack support at the center. Choose a frame that supports the mattress properly.
If you intend to use the projector a lot, see if you can find a projector with extended warranty on the bulb.
Some projectors perform better on grey screen while some on white screen. Google the projector that you want to find with screen color to check which one worked best for a reviewer.
Before buying a screen, do check how the projector works on the wall. Most projectors work as good on wall. For a cheap, but surprisingly high quality screen, go to a Home Depot or other hardware store and look for something called Polywall. It typically comes in large sheets and is used in construction. It’s bendy, and looks/feels like a projection screen. It costs $20 for a sheet large enough for ~110 inches of widescreen real estate.
Here is a simple guide to help you decide on a projector.
Use this calculator to find the best screen size for the size of your room and the distance your projector will be from the screen.
